Reporter and producer Ryan Levi is stepping into a new role as Tradeoffs’ first managing editor, marking an important milestone in the newsroom’s growth and evolution. In this new role, he will help lead the newsroom’s editorial strategy and guide its coverage as Tradeoffs expands its multi-platform strategy.

Since joining Tradeoffs in 2019, Levi has helped define the newsroom’s editorial approach and produced reporting on some of the nation’s most urgent health policy challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, Medicaid reform and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in health care. In his new role, Levi will oversee Tradeoffs’ editorial team and help guide the organization’s journalism as it continues to grow its reach and impact.

“I’m honored to step into this role to help lead Tradeoffs into its next chapter,” Levi said. “I’ve always valued Tradeoffs’ committment to making complex health policy accessible and meaningful. I’m excited to support our team in continuing to produce journalism that informs, challenges and highlights evidence over political talking points.”

Levi has played a central role in many of Tradeoffs’ biggest projects, including The Fifth Branch, which won a National Edward R. Murrow Award, and a multi-part series on racial bias in health care AI. His reporting has spanned topics such as Medicaid, mental health, addiction and health technology, and has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and Morning Edition, PBS NewsHour, Slate and The Marshall Project. He is also the president of the DC chapter of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists.

“Ryan has been instrumental to Tradeoffs’ growth,” said Dan Gorenstein, Tradeoffs’ founder and executive editor. “His sharp editorial instincts, deep commitment to the mission and collaborative spirit make him the ideal person to take on this leadership role.”

As Levi steps into his new position, Tradeoffs is hiring a new reporter/producer to join the team. Read the full job description and apply here.
