SUMMARY:Decoding the Moment: Health Impacts of the “One Big Beautiful Bill”
DESCRIPTION:The House-passed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” now under consideration by the Senate cuts federal spending on Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act by about $1 trillion over the next decade. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the law will push 16 million people off their health insurance by 2034 and also save money by nixing a Biden-era rule to increase nursing home staffing. Researchers at Penn LDI and Yale have estimated that the changes could lead to 51\,000 preventable deaths each year. \nIn the third seminar presented as part of Tradeoffs and LDI’s “Decoding the Moment” series\, University of Pennsylvania experts will help us understand how the policies proposed in the bill could cost people their health insurance and potentially their lives. \nRead the event recap or watch the event recording below. \n\nSpeaker Info: \n\nEric Roberts\, PhD\, Associate Professor\, General Internal Medicine\, Perelman School of Medicine\nAditi Vasan\, MD\, MSHP\, Assistant Professor\, Pediatrics\, Perelman School of Medicine; Pediatric Hospitalist\, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia\nDan Gorenstein\, Founder and Executive Editor\, Tradeoffs\nRachel M. Werner\, MD\, PhD\, Executive Director\, Penn LDI; Robert D. Eilers Memorial – William Maul Measey Professorship in Health Care Management and Economics\, Wharton School; Professor\, Medicine\, Perelman School of Medicine\n\nAbout the Decoding the Moment series \nThe Trump administration’s sweeping efforts to reshape federal health policy have created a fast-moving\, uncertain landscape for the health care sector and policymakers. In response\, Tradeoffs and Penn LDI launched the virtual event series\, Decoding the Moment\, to provide timely\, evidence-based discussions on key federal policy changes. Through conversations with leading experts\, this series explores the implications of recent actions and what they signal for the future. The first discussion in the series focused on new rules for vaccine approvals\, and the second on cuts to violence prevention funding.

SUMMARY:Decoding the Moment: Can the No Surprises Act Be Fixed?
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nCongress passed the incredibly popular No Surprises Act in 2020 with two goals: shield patients from unexpected medical bills and lower the exorbitant prices charged by some doctors.  \nOne of those goals is going great — patients are now protected from “surprise medical bills” that came from inadvertently getting care from doctors who didn’t take their insurance. But new academic research and reporting from The New York Times find that some doctors are cashing in on the law — charging insurers way more now\, fueling higher insurance premiums.  \nIn the next virtual event in the “Decoding the Moment” series presented by Tradeoffs and the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania\, two leading researchers and a former CMS official will discuss why the No Surprises Act has failed to deliver on its cost-cutting promise\, what could be done to change things\, and whether there are larger lessons for future policy change.\n \nREGISTER HERE \nSpeaker Info \nZack Cooper\, Associate Professor of Public Health and of Economics\, Yale University; Director of Health Policy\, Tobin Center for Economic Policy; Director\, Health Care Affordability Lab at Yale\n \nBenjamin Chartock\, Assistant Professor of Economics\, Bentley University\n \nLindsey Murtagh\, Senior Fellow in Health Services\, Policy and Practice\, Brown University School of Public Health\n \nDan Gorenstein\, Founder and Executive Editor\, Tradeoffs (Moderator) \n  \nAbout the Decoding the Moment series \nThe Trump administration’s sweeping efforts to reshape federal health policy have created a fast-moving\, uncertain landscape for the health care sector and policymakers. In response\, Penn LDI and Tradeoffs’ “Decoding the Moment” series provides timely\, evidence-based discussions with leading experts on key federal policy changes. The series explores the implications of recent actions and what they signal for the future. Past events have focused on the health impacts of the “One Big Beautiful Bill\,” Obamacare subsidies at a crossroads\, new rules for vaccine approvals\, cuts to violence prevention programs\, and contextualizing the rural health transformation program. \nViews expressed are those of the speakers and do not necessarily represent those of Tradeoffs\, the University of Pennsylvania Health System (Penn Medicine)\, or the University of Pennsylvania.
