SUMMARY:Will RFK Jr. Make America Healthy Again?
DESCRIPTION:“Will RFK Jr. Make America Healthy Again?” is presented by the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism. \nREGISTER HERE \nAbout the event: Robert F. Kennedy\, Jr. is the most controversial pick to become the nation’s health secretary in modern history. He has spent decades spreading misinformation and fears about vaccines and the myth they cause autism\, he’s voiced skepticism that HIV causes AIDs\, and he’s suggested a link between school shootings and growing use of antidepressants. RKF Jr.’s confirmation signals major changes at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He’s vowed to shift the federal government’s focus from infectious diseases toward an “epidemic” of chronic diseases\, such as obesity and autoimmune conditions — with a particular focus on processed foods and chemical exposures. The political\, legal and economic challenges facing him — from Democrats\, doctors\, researchers and business leaders — will be formidable\, and Kennedy lacks prior government or health leadership experience. In this webinar\, we will examine what Kennedy’s arrival at HHS will mean for the American health system and key federal agencies such as the FDA\, CDC and NIH that would fall under his purview. We’ll ask how this unorthodox appointment will impact our public health system and access to vaccines. And we’ll discuss how the ambitions of the “Make American Healthy Movement” might confront the realities of America’s “epidemic” of chronic disease. \nFeatured Speakers: \n– Dan Gorenstein\, founder and executive editor of Tradeoffs\n– Isabella Cueto\, chronic disease reporter at STAT\n– James Hodge\, JD\, Peter Kiewit Foundation Professor of Law at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and director of the Center for Public Health Law and Policy at Arizona State University

SUMMARY:Decoding the Moment: New Rules for Vaccine Approvals
DESCRIPTION:Decoding the Moment kicks off with a virtual seminar on Friday\, May 16 focused on the changes to the vaccine approval processes that were announced this week by the Trump administration requiring that all “new” vaccines be tested against a placebo\, which HHS described as a “radical departure from past practices.” Public health experts say the change raises timing\, ethics\, and cost issues and could affect this year’s COVID-19 vaccine updates. The discussion will tackle what is proposed and why\, what it could mean for vaccine availability\, public confidence\, and disease spread. \nRead the event recap or watch the event recording below.  \n\nSpeaker Info: \n\nPaul Offit\, MD\, Director of the Vaccine Education Center and professor of pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia\nAlison Buttenheim\, PhD\, MBA\, Professor of Family and Community Health at Penn Nursing and of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the Perelman School of Medicine; Scientific Director of the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics at the University of Pennsylvania\nDan Gorenstein\, Founder and Executive Editor\, Tradeoffs\n\nAbout the Decoding the Moment series \nThe Trump administration’s sweeping efforts to reshape federal health policy have created a fast-moving\, uncertain landscape for the health care sector and policymakers. In response\, Tradeoffs and Penn LDI launched the virtual event series\, Decoding the Moment\, to provide timely\, evidence-based discussions on key federal policy changes. Through conversations with leading experts\, this series explores the implications of recent actions and what they signal for the future.

SUMMARY:Sozosei Foundation Virtual Book Club Discussion of "Entangled"
DESCRIPTION:Small acts with enormous consequences. Low-level offenses that can set off years of complications—snarls that tangle\, untangle\, and tangle again. \nThese are everyday experiences for many people living with chronic mental illness—people for whom care is hard to access\, and for whom misdemeanor arrests and legal system involvement are the norm. Is there a way to stop this cycle? \nJoin scholars Michael Compton\, MD\, Leah Pope\, Ph.D.\, and Amy Watson Ph.D.\, on May 30 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. ET for an engaging conversation about their new book\, Entangled: How People With Serious Mental Illness Get Caught in Misdemeanor Systems\, which explores how individuals with chronic mental illness are routinely—and needlessly—caught in America’s misdemeanor system\, with little benefit to themselves or the broader public. The discussion will be moderated by Tradeoffs reporter and producer Ryan Levi. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Decoding the Moment: Cuts to Violence Prevention Programs
DESCRIPTION:Gun violence is the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Yet in April\, the Trump administration announced plans to terminate hundreds of millions of dollars in grants from the Department of Justice (DOJ) that support violence reduction. The Department said the grants no longer aligned with administration priorities. The cuts affect 37 states across urban\, suburban\, and rural areas. DOJ’s move comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fired most of the staff of the Division of Violence Prevention\, weakening the agency’s ability to use public health data to prevent violence. \nIn the second seminar presented as part of Tradeoffs and Penn LDI’s “Decoding the Moment” series\, leading experts will help us understand the programs targeted by these cuts\, the lessons we’ve learned about how to prevent gun violence\, and what the administration’s actions could mean for communities impacted by this uniquely American epidemic. \nRead the event recap or watch the event recording below. \n\nSpeakers: \n\nElinore Kaufman\, MD\, MSHP\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Surgery\, Perelman School of Medicine\nJeremy Biddle\, Director of Violence Reduction Policy and Programs\, Crime and Justice Policy Lab\nDan Gorenstein\, Founder and Executive Editor\, Tradeoffs (Moderator)\n\nAbout the Decoding the Moment series \nThe Trump administration’s sweeping efforts to reshape federal health policy have created a fast-moving\, uncertain landscape for the health care sector and policymakers. In response\, Tradeoffs and Penn LDI launched the virtual event series\, Decoding the Moment\, to provide timely\, evidence-based discussions on key federal policy changes. Through conversations with leading experts\, this series explores the implications of recent actions and what they signal for the future. SUMMARY:Decoding the Moment: Health Impacts of the “One Big Beautiful Bill”
DESCRIPTION:The House-passed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” now under consideration by the Senate cuts federal spending on Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act by about $1 trillion over the next decade. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the law will push 16 million people off their health insurance by 2034 and also save money by nixing a Biden-era rule to increase nursing home staffing. Researchers at Penn LDI and Yale have estimated that the changes could lead to 51\,000 preventable deaths each year. \nIn the third seminar presented as part of Tradeoffs and LDI’s “Decoding the Moment” series\, University of Pennsylvania experts will help us understand how the policies proposed in the bill could cost people their health insurance and potentially their lives. \nRead the event recap or watch the event recording below.  \n\nSpeaker Info: \n\nEric Roberts\, PhD\, Associate Professor\, General Internal Medicine\, Perelman School of Medicine\nAditi Vasan\, MD\, MSHP\, Assistant Professor\, Pediatrics\, Perelman School of Medicine; Pediatric Hospitalist\, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia\nDan Gorenstein\, Founder and Executive Editor\, Tradeoffs\nRachel M. Werner\, MD\, PhD\, Executive Director\, Penn LDI; Robert D. Eilers Memorial – William Maul Measey Professorship in Health Care Management and Economics\, Wharton School; Professor\, Medicine\, Perelman School of Medicine\n\nAbout the Decoding the Moment series \nThe Trump administration’s sweeping efforts to reshape federal health policy have created a fast-moving\, uncertain landscape for the health care sector and policymakers. SUMMARY:Decoding the Moment: Obamacare Subsidies at a Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Congress is debating whether to extend pandemic-era federal Obamacare subsidies that are set to expire at the end of the year. Without these enhanced subsidies\, experts estimate nearly 5 million people could become uninsured in 2026\, and premiums for those still buying coverage through the Affordable Care Act could jump an average of 75%. \nIn the next virtual event in the “Decoding the Moment” series presented by Tradeoffs and the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania\, national experts Katherine Baicker and Jonathan Gruber will discuss why these subsidies were created\, the role they’ve played in helping Americans afford health insurance coverage\, and the tradeoffs federal policymakers should weigh as they explore options to provide coverage that is affordable for consumers and taxpayers. \nRead the event recap or watch the event recording below.\n \n\nSpeakers: \n\nKatherine Baicker\, Provost and Emmett Dedmon Distinguished Service Professor\, University of Chicago\nJonathan Gruber\, Ford Professor of Economics\, MIT\nDan Gorenstein\, Founder and Executive Editor\, Tradeoffs (Moderator)\n\n\nAbout the Decoding the Moment series \nThe Trump administration’s sweeping efforts to reshape federal health policy have created a fast-moving\, uncertain landscape for the health care sector and policymakers. SUMMARY:Decoding the Moment: The $50 Billion Rural Health Program in Context
DESCRIPTION:All 50 states have submitted proposals to the Trump administration for a piece of the new $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program. Passed as part of the Republicans’ megabill last summer\, the program was included in the legislation to address concerns about the potential impact of nearly $1 trillion in federal health spending cuts over the next decade. States rushed to pull together applications this fall with initiatives focused on workforce development\, telehealth\, and access to healthy food. The Trump administration is expected to announce awards by the end of 2025 but experts also worry that the fund will fail to deliver meaningful results for rural communities. \nIn the next virtual event in the “Decoding the Moment” series presented by Tradeoffs and the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University (Penn LDI) of Pennsylvania\, national experts will discuss the challenges facing health care access in rural America\, evidence-based solutions to those issues\, and how states and the federal government are looking to use this new pot of money. \nWatch the event recording: \n\nSpeakers: \n\nKevin Bennett\, PhD\, Director Center for Rural & Primary Healthcare; Professor\, Family and Preventative Medicine\, School of Medicine Columbia\, University of South Carolina\nPaula Chatterjee\, MD\, MPH\, Director of Health Equity Research\, Penn LDI; Assistant Professor\, Medicine\, Perelman School of Medicine\nSarah Jane Tribble\, Chief Rural Correspondent\, KFF Health News\nDan Gorenstein\, Founder and Executive Editor\, Tradeoffs (Moderator)\n\nAbout the Decoding the Moment series \nThe Trump administration’s sweeping efforts to reshape federal health policy have created a fast-moving\, uncertain landscape for the health care sector and policymakers. In response\, Penn LDI and Tradeoffs’ “Decoding the Moment” series provides timely\, evidence-based discussions with leading experts on key federal policy changes. The series explores the implications of recent actions and what they signal for the future. Past events have focused on the health impacts of the “One Big Beautiful Bill\,” Obamacare subsidies at a crossroads\, new rules for vaccine approvals\, and cuts to violence prevention programs. \nViews expressed are those of the speakers and do not necessarily represent those of Tradeoffs\, the University of Pennsylvania Health System (Penn Medicine)\, or the University of Pennsylvania.
